European Mobility Week

European Mobility Week

The EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK campaign is the perfect opportunity to present sustainable mobility alternatives to citizens, to explain the challenges that cities and towns are facing in order to induce behavioural change and make progress towards creating a more sustainable transport strategy for Europe

Since 2002 EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK has sought to influence mobility and urban transport issues, as well as improve the health and quality of life of citizens. The campaign also gives citizens the chance to explore what the role of city streets really is, and to explore concrete solutions to tackle urban challenges, such as air pollution.

Local authorities are strongly encouraged to use the Week to test new transport measures and get feedback from citizens. It is also an excellent opportunity for local stakeholders to get together and discuss the different aspects of mobility and air quality, find innovative solutions to reduce car-use and thus emissions, and test new technologies or planning measures.

To discover more about how participating cities have used the campaign to enhance their sustainable transport policies, visit the Campaign materials page.

Am I eligible to take part?

All cities, towns and local authorities, regardless of size, can take part in EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK. All you need is political support and the will to showcase the benefits of sustainable mobility!

Once you’ve registered online, your National Coordinator  will review your application and approve it (if your country does not have a National Coordinator, the European Info Point will do so). Once completed, your city will be made visible on the participant’s page.

Please note that only local authorities can register a city.

But what if I don't represent a city?

Non-municipal actors that are promoting a behavioural shift towards a more sustainable urban mobility culture can register their MOBILITYACTION online. These actions do not need to take place between 16 - 22 September. Check out the MOBILITYACTIONS page  for more information.

What does taking part in EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK require?

There are three distinct criteria which make up participation:

Week of activity

A week of activities and events that celebrate the EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK theme  are held.

Permanent measure

At least one practical, long-term measure that encourages people to opt for sustainable modes of transport is implemented as part of EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK.

Car-Free Day

“Car-Free Day” takes place on 22 September, in which street(s) are closed to cars and open to people. There is no set street length that must be closed, but it should be substantial enough to show participants the benefits of having the area as a safe public space.

Participants need not implement all three criteria, but at least one must be organised. Those who do implement all three are known as “golden participants”, and are eligible to apply for the EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK award.

Register online

Cities registering for the first time will be asked to “sign up”, and will be required to provide information on their city and relevant local government contact details. You will also need to indicate which of the three criteria you’ll be carrying out (see below).

Participants can also complete and sign the EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK Charter. In principle, the Charter should be signed by your Mayor but it can also be any other elected official that has the power to decide on this matter. The Charter should be sent back to your National Coordinator, but if no National Coordinator is appointed in your country, it can be sent to the European Info Point.

EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK Award

The EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK Award is presented to the local authority that is judged to have done the most to raise awareness of sustainable mobility during EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK (16-22 September). To apply, local authorities must have implemented the three criteria and signed the Charter.

Winners of the award, chosen by an independent panel of transport experts, receive a three-minute video in both English and their native language highlighting their achievements. In addition, the winning city and finalists are promoted via the campaign's channels.

Murcia takes home the 2015 EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK Award

Murcia (Spain) has been announced as the winner of the EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK Award 2015. Commissioner Karmenu Vella, responsible for the Environment, presented the award, congratulating Murcia for taking steps to promote active modes of travel such as walking and cycling.

Taking the stand, Mr Vella also praised all who participate in EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK pointing out that it is the residents who are the real winners. He also stressed the need for more collaboration to achieve sustainable mobility objectives, saying: “we need to act together and on many fronts. We need to increase active transport, car-sharing and green public transport".

Murcia’s fellow finalists for the EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK award, Lisbon (Portugal) and Palma de Mallorca (Spain) were also commended for their efforts in encouraging multimodality in their 2015 campaigns.
